Kanwal Yasir, Student Member ASHRAE
Advancing Sustainable Building Design Through Technical Expertise and Inclusive Leadership

Kanwal Yasir has built a career defined by structural engineering excellence, environmental responsibility, and a strong commitment to advancing sustainable building practices. Her professional journey began in Pakistan, where she completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil and Structural Engineering. These early academic years shaped her interest in resilient building design, material performance, and the role of engineering in creating safer, more efficient built environments.
Kanwal’s first professional roles as a Structural Engineering Intern and later as a Structural Engineer allowed her to apply analytical methods, seismic and wind design principles, and advanced modelling tools to residential and commercial projects. Her work involved close collaboration with architects, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams, strengthening her ability to integrate structural solutions into broader project objectives. Working as a university lecturer further expanded her impact, as she mentored students, supervised research, and fostered critical thinking in engineering education.
Her transition to Sweden marked a significant step in her career. Motivated by a desire to contribute to sustainable building practices, Kanwal pursued a Master’s degree in Energy‑Efficient Construction. This academic shift deepened her understanding of building energy performance, passive design strategies, and the environmental implications of construction decisions.
Kanwal’s work demonstrated her ability to apply sustainability principles to industrial contexts. She assessed recycled content in tools, developed standardized evaluation processes, and contributed to circularity initiatives aligned with ISO 14021:2016. Her research and publication on passive design and PV‑battery systems further strengthened her expertise in carbon‑reduction strategies.
Today, Kanwal focuses on AI‑driven retrofit solutions that simplify decision‑making and accelerate the transition to energy‑efficient buildings. Her work integrates data science, building physics, and sustainability principles to support practical, scalable improvements in the built environment.
As a female and immigrant engineer in a highly technical field, Kanwal exemplifies ASHRAE’s values of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Her career demonstrates how inclusive leadership strengthens innovation and inspires emerging professionals to pursue meaningful contributions to sustainable building design.
