Astrid Ortis, Affiliate ASHRAE

A Career Shaped by Scientific Curiosity, Environmental Purpose, and Inclusive Innovation

Astrid Ortis has built a career defined by analytical rigor, environmental commitment, and a sustained dedication to advancing sustainable energy technologies. Her professional journey began in Sweden, where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics. These early academic experiences marked another shift in her understanding of how scientific principles shape environmental responsibility and how engineered systems influence modern society.

Ms. Astrid Ortis, an Austrian-born physicist and sustainable energy technologist, serves as a Technology Development Engineer in Stockholm. With a BSc in Physics and an MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering, she drawn by its commitment to diversity and research.

In 2023, Ms. Ortis co-authored a landmark comparative life cycle assessment of two industrial desiccant wheel dehumidifiers. Published in Energy Conversion and Management, this study applied the EU Taxonomy to cradle-to-grave environmental impacts, pinpointing electricity consumption in the usage phase as the dominant driver and proposing recycled-content and energy-efficiency improvements for sustainable dehumidification systems.

Building on her analytical insights, Ortis collaborates globally to translate LCA outcomes into product design. She leads cross-functional initiatives to integrate sustainable materials and optimize operational energy, ensuring that desiccant dehumidifiers meet rigorous environmental standards without compromising financial viability for pharmaceutical, food, and other industrial clients.

By excelling in a male-dominated sector and championing inclusive innovation and sustainability, Ms. Astrid Ortis exemplifies ASHRAE’s Diversity values. Her work underpins global and modern dehumidification practices, inspiring emerging women engineers in HVAC&R and highlighting the vital and distinctive contributions of diverse talents in shaping energy-efficient indoor climate technologies.
