Advancing Flexible and Resilient Energy Systems for a Sustainable Built Environment Through Technical Excellence and Inclusive Leadership

Angelia D. Handoko has built a career shaped by scientific curiosity, engineering discipline, and a strong commitment to advancing energy flexibility and resilience. Her professional journey began in Indonesia, where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physics–Energy Engineering. During these formative years, she developed a deep interest in renewable energy systems, especially PV technologies, and the environmental implications of energy choices — interests that would guide her future work.
Her early professional roles allowed her to apply analytical methods, computational tools, and design principles to real‑world renewable energy projects. She contributed to on‑grid, hybrid, and off‑grid PV system designs and conducted feasibility studies. These experiences strengthened her technical foundation and broadened her understanding of how renewable systems can support resilient and efficient built environments.
Angelia’s work further expanded her expertise. As a PV Engineer, she led technical assessments, performed commissioning activities, and contributed to the successful deployment of more than 8 MWp of solar capacity across residential, commercial, and industrial facilities. Her responsibilities included performance analysis, troubleshooting, and product evaluation, demonstrating her ability to integrate engineering precision with practical field execution.
Motivated by a desire to deepen her knowledge of sustainable energy systems, Angelia pursued a Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Engineering, specializing in energy systems for buildings and cities. Her master’s thesis focused on the design of a net-zero energy data center in Stockholm, integrating energy efficiency measures, renewable energy generation, heat recovery, and energy system integration. This academic progression strengthened her understanding of building energy optimization and the importance of considering energy systems as an integrated whole.
Her transition to Sweden marked an important step in her career. She conducted feasibility studies for large‑scale solar parks, applying GIS‑based screening, PV layout development, and IRR modelling to support investment decisions. Today, as an Energy Engineer, she contributes to renewable energy consulting, and energy optimization, with a growing focus on energy flexibility and resilience.
As a female engineer in a highly technical field, Angelia exemplifies ASHRAE’s values of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Her career demonstrates how inclusive leadership strengthens innovation and inspires emerging professionals to pursue meaningful contributions to the built environment.
